Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting, controlling and positionally dominating an opponent, and submission techniques including chokes, arm locks and leg locks. It was developed in the early 20th century by the Gracie family in Brazil and has since become one of the most popular martial arts in the world. BJJ focuses on leverage and technique rather than brute strength and violence.
BJJ is a form of self-defense that emphasizes the use of leverage and technique to overcome a larger and stronger opponent. It is based on the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground. However, one must remember that regardless of any past claims, size and strength do matter in both self defense and combat sports; therefore it is training that ultimately can become an equalizer against larger stronger more athletic opponents.
BJJ practitioners learn a variety of techniques, including joint locks, chokes, and throws. These techniques are used to control an opponent and eventually submit them. BJJ also incorporates a variety of ground fighting positions, such as guard, side control, and mount.
BJJ is a great way to stay in shape and learn self-defense. It is also a great way to meet new people and make friends. BJJ is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels.
Whether you are looking to learn self-defense, stay in shape, or just have fun, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a great martial art to get involved in. With its emphasis on technique and leverage, it is a great way to learn how to defend yourself and stay safe.

BJJ was developed in the early 20th century by the Gracie family. Members of the Gracie family, most notably Carlos and Hélio Gracie, are credited with popularizing Brazilian jiu-jitsu and making it the martial art it is today. The foundation of BJJ is kosen judo, a Japanese martial art developed in the late 19th century by Jigoro Kano. Kano took aspects of multiple traditional Japanese martial arts and incorporated them into his new style of grappling, which eventually evolved into judo.
The history of Brazilian jiu jitsu can be traced back to the early 1900s, when Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese judoka, traveled to Brazil to teach the art of judo. Maeda was a student of Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo, and he was invited to Brazil by Gastão Gracie, a Brazilian businessman. Maeda taught the Gracie family the fundamentals of judo, and the Gracie family began to develop their own style of jiu jitsu.
The Gracie family took aspects of judo and modified them to create their own style of jiu-jitsu. The focus of BJJ is on techniques that allow smaller and weaker practitioners to defend themselves against larger and stronger opponents. This is achieved through the use of techniques such as joint locks and chokes, which allow a smaller practitioner to control a larger opponent by leveraging their body weight and muscle power. The goal of BJJ is to control and submit an opponent by finding the most efficient way to do so. Brazilian jiu jitsu focuses on grappling and ground fighting and is known for its effectiveness in self-defense and mixed martial arts competitions.
The Gracie family is credited with popularizing Brazilian jiu jitsu in Brazil and around the world. In the early 1990s, the Gracie family began to promote Brazilian jiu jitsu through the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The UFC was a no-holds-barred mixed martial arts tournament that featured fighters from different martial arts backgrounds. The Gracie family's success in the UFC helped to popularize Brazilian jiu jitsu and make it one of the most popular martial arts in the world.
Today, Brazilian jiu jitsu is practiced in many countries around the world. It is a popular martial art for self-defense, sport, and mixed martial arts competitions. Brazilian jiu jitsu is also used by many law enforcement and military personnel for hand-to-hand combat training.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It is a form of self-defense that uses leverage and technique to overcome an opponent. The techniques of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are based on the principles of leverage, balance, and timing. The goal of the practitioner is to use these principles to control and submit an opponent.
BJJ is composed of a wide variety of techniques, including throws, sweeps, chokes, joint locks, and submission holds. Throws and sweeps are used to off-balance an opponent and gain a dominant position. Chokes and joint locks are used to control an opponent and inflict pain, while submission holds are used to force an opponent to tap out or submit.
BJJ practitioners attempt to gain a dominant position and then use the various techniques in order to control and submit their opponent. This usually involves pinning an opponent to the ground and working to attain a dominant position. From there, a practitioner may attempt a joint lock or apply a choke in order to submit their opponent.
Joint locks are often used to control an opponent’s limbs and prevent them from escaping or more commonly as submission holds. Chokes are used to restrict an opponent’s air supply and cause them to submit. Throws and sweeps are used to take an opponent off balance and put them in a vulnerable position. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu also includes a variety of ground fighting techniques such as guard passes, escapes from pins, sweeps and other reversals, and a vast array of submission holds. All of these techniques are used to gain an advantage over an opponent and ultimately submit them.
